POLITICIANS JOIN LAGBAC IN SUPPORT OF MARRIAGE EQUALITY AT NORTHALSTED MARKET DAYS

Illinois State Representative Sara Feigenholtz and Alderman James Cappleman joined LAGBAC at their booth at Northalsted Market Days on Saturday, August 11th, and Sunday, August 12th, in support of marriage equality as celebrants of LAGBAC’s mock wedding ceremonies. Congressman Mike Quigley was also on hand to lend his support.

Hundreds of fest-goers were “married” by LAGBAC board members and volunteers over Market Days weekend, including several dozen by Rep. Feigenholtz and Ald. Cappleman, who, himself, will be entering into a civil union with his partner in September. The theme of the LAGBAC booth was Marriage Equality, and the booth was appropriately decorated in white, complete with a replica of a wedding cake with two brides and two grooms as the wedding topper. The “vows” made by the couples included a promise to continue to support marriage equality in sickness and health, in good times and bad, until the death of DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act) and other anti-marriage equality legislation. Newly-“wedded” couples received rings and marriage certificates pledging support to marriage equality on which they could write their names.

The event was a huge success, with couples seeking to participate in the faux ceremonies until late into the evening on both days.
